Saint Kyriakos Festival – Syros

Agios Kyriakosa 1 - Gastronomy Tours

EVENT INFO

One of the most distinct religious and traditional celebrations on Syros Island occurs annually during the first ten days of August at one of the island’s most beautiful and picturesque chapels.

In one of Syros’ oldest churches, Saint Kyriakos, located in the small settlement of Danako—the birthplace of musician and rebetiko artist Markos Vamvakaris—a traditional festival is held every year.

According to custom, after the divine liturgy on August 8th, in the chapel officially recorded in 1623 but dating back to 1300, a feast is organized. Locals begin with treats such as mastiha, Syros’ traditional loukoumi (Turkish delight), and watermelon, followed by an evening of traditional celebrations featuring island songs, dance, food, and drink.
