In Istanbul, at the crossroads of East and West, Thanassis Gatsios was inducted into the aromatic world of herbs and the secrets of traditional distillation. In 1878, he returned to Syrrako, Ioannina, Epirus — one of Greece’s most historic villages — and founded the first distillery in Epirus.
There, with recipes from Constantinople blended with skill, he created ouzo, tsipouro, brandy, and liqueurs of various flavours — all of excellent quality. Today, visitors to the premises in Arta can witness production in one of the most state-of-the-art distilleries in Greece.
