Two friends and electrical engineers, Yannis Maltezos and Achilleas Lampsidis, began an experimental viticulture adventure in 1980, cultivating Yannis’s family estate in Anavyssos — 50 km from Athens, in Attica — which had lain fallow since the phylloxera disaster of 1956. In 1981, following careful study, they grafted 2.5 hectares with Cabernet Sauvignon and Ugni Blanc. Their first harvest in 1982, pressed at the Maltezos family press (in use since 1864), received enthusiastic praise from the Wine Institute of Athens.
That was the beginning of Strofilia — one of Attica’s most respected estate wineries, spanning both Attica and Peloponnese terroirs. In 1988, the founders invested their own labour to build the first winery at the Anavyssos vineyard. In 1993, chemical engineer Vasilis Vlachos joined as a third partner, having already taken charge of the oenological department since 1991.
